Friday Blog – My Journey into Vedic Astrology

Friday Blog – My Journey into Vedic Astrology

Hi everyone!
I’ve decided to start a Friday blog where I’ll share what I’ve been learning each week and, more importantly, how it might help you understand yourself and your life a little better.
Lately, I’ve been delving into Vedic Astrology, also known as Jyotish, and I have to say – I’m completely fascinated by it.
What’s so interesting is that it uses the very same planets and looks at the sky from the same Earth-based perspective as Western astrology, but it interprets everything through a completely different lens.
The Tropical zodiac which is the one most familiar to us, is based on the seasons, starting at 0o of Aries at the Spring Equinox, through to Pisces as winter draws to a close. The Vedic Zodiac however, is based on the actual fixed stars using the Sidereal system, so the exact position of the planets at your moment of birth is based on the actual position of those planets in the sky. This produces a difference of around 24o which means that most (not all), of your planets shift back a sign. If, for example, you have a Leo sun, in Vedic this may now fall in Cancer.
The reason there is a 24o difference is because the earth slowly wobbles on its axis, over thousands of years, causing the position of the equinoxes to shift backwards through the zodiac. Western astrology uses a different reference point for this shift, which accounts for the 24o difference.
So there’s the techie stuff out the way, what actual difference does this make to peoples’ lives?
Well, in Western Astrology, the focus tends to be personality, psychology and identity, but in Vedic astrology, that focus shifts to Karma, life path, destiny and timing.
Vedic astrology is deeply tied to Hinduism, so it includes:
Karma from past lives
Spiritual evolution
Timing of life events which many practitioners find remarkably precise!
I’m only just beginning this journey myself, but I’m already finding it incredibly rich and thought-provoking.
If you’d like to explore alongside me, I’ll be sharing more over the coming weeks, including some of the fascinating timing techniques used in Vedic astrology and how they can add another layer of insight to your chart.
Until next Friday, take care and enjoy looking up at the stars.
May the stars guide your curiosity!
